WHAT'S NEW THIS SATURDAY: MARKING HALF A MILLION HITS

Friday, 15th of March 2013 Print

Dear All,

                                                MARKING HALF A MILLION HITS

Four items to mark our approaching 500,000th page visit.

1)      MOST CONSULTED ITEMS

I have posted just over 1500 items to this site since it went live in December 2010. The top 20  most popular items, listed below,  account for more than 50,000 of the half million page views to date.

By far the most consulted items were on measles, accounting for 17,000 of the 50,000. Sam Katz's comparison of measles and polio, with 3380 hits, is by far the most popular reader comment. Readers with interests in measles are reminded to view our newly created measles homepage,www.measlesupdates.org, hosted since January 2013 by Dr. William Mbabazi of the American Red Cross.

Good reading.

2)      READER CONTRIBUTION

The following thoughts are from Pierre Ngom, of the UNICEF Mideast regional office in Amman.

Dear Bob:
Greetings from Amman.

As we approach the 2015 MDG horizon, and strategize about the post 2015 development agenda, it is important to go back to thoughtful pieces on why setting goals is critical to saving lives. Please consider the 2013 Annual Letter by Bill Gates as a candidate for your call below. In a style unique to visionaries, Bill Gates swings back to the industrial revolution to demonstrate the role of measurement and adjustments in improving steam engines. He then brings in Jim Grant, UNICEF's Executive Director in the 1980s, to show how he led sweeping changes in child survival by setting goals and data systems to measure progress. Please find the link here: http://annualletter.gatesfoundation.org/pdf/2013_AL_English.pdf

Best regards,
--Pierre

3)      READER CONTRIBUTION

Responding to my call for contributions, reader Surender N. Gupta writes from Himachal Pradesh, as follows. His chosen topic is “Health for All through Primary Health Care.”

Good reading.

BD

Dear Sir,

Let me be given an opportunity to express my views on the subject of Health for All through Primary Health Care (HFA though PHC) by 2000 AD. The Alma-Ata declaration in 1978 revolutionized the world’s interpretation of health, Health for All through Primary Health Care (HFA though PHC) by 2000 AD. Primary healthcare is a guiding tool for the establishment of a sustainable healthcare system that acts to eliminate not only the medical causes but also social, economic and political causes of ill health. To reduce health inequities between the developed and developing countries as well as within the country (e.g. urban and rural) primary healthcare addresses a range of approaches for prioritizing the health needs and fundamental determinants of health. It provides the sense of ownership to the community people regarding their health; health solutions are being innovated, implemented and sustained by them. Surprisingly, two of the most inspiring and least understood topics of global health are “Health for all” and “Primary Healthcare”. It is integral to achieving health for all.

Revitalizing Alma-Ata and learning from three decades of experience is crucial to reach the ambitious goal of health for all in all countries, both rich and poor; also for today and tomorrow. A great contributor to this groundbreaking document of HFA though PHC; Carl Taylor has rightly said," There is no universal solution, but there is a universal process to find an appropriate local solution"? We believe that revitalization of the tenets of the Alma-Ata Declaration is necessary to meet the MDGs in 2015 and beyond. Like the first primary health-care revolution, this will take champions—as Mahler said at the 2008 World Health Assembly “unless we all become partisans in renewed local and global battles for...equity...we shall indeed betray the future of our children and grandchildren.”

We need to analyse as to how primary healthcare has been implemented in different communities with diverse challenges and obstacles and how the principles of primary healthcare can guide health policies and implementation of those policies. It is still relevant in the present scenario. It is a renaissance in primary health care.

Thank you very much.
With warm personal regards,

Nikhil

4)      SOCIAL INTERCOURSE

This is my second favorite Frenchman joke.

There is a petty functionary in a drab government bureau in Paris who goes to the office every morning, does some scribbling, and comes home at night. His is an existence banale.

His only amusement is to attend the monthly dinner meetings of a men’s club where the evening ends with one member’s name being picked at random from a hat, with a conversational topic assigned to that member , the topic picked at random from another hat.

Our little functionary is surprised to hear his name called one night. This has never happened to him before. His topic? “Speak for five minutes on sexual intercourse.”

To the surprise of one and all, he spontaneously comes up with a witty and somewhat ribald discussion on this most favorite of all French activities. He sits down amid peals of laughter and prolonged applause.

Back home, his wife asks him who was asked to speak.

“It was me, ma chérie.”

“Oh, really! And what was your topic?”

He hesitates, afraid to tell the truth.

“I spoke on leisure boating.”

The following day, the wife chances to meet a fellow member of the club.

“Is it true that my husband was the speaker last night?”

“Yes, Madame. He was quite amusing.”

“I’m really quite surprised. You know, he’s only done it twice in his life. The first time, he was sick to his stomach. The second time, his hat flew off in the wind!”
