CSU 38/2011: INFECTIOUS DISEASE BURDEN AND INTELLIGENCE

Monday, 31st of January 2011 Print
Bill Gates's annual letter includes a graphic presentation from 184 countries at http://www.gatesfoundation.org/annual-letter/2011/Documents/2011-annual-letter.pdf
which shows a strong correlation between the burden of infectious disease and IQ (page 11, .pdf file).

Why? Consider, for example, the burden of soil transmitted helminths. Children will, in many countries, compete for nutrients with STHs, unless they receive antihelminthics twice yearly. Once a country is cleared of the burden of disease, IQ and academic performance are both likely to rise.

Good reading.
