The media reports from Pakistan may distract many readers from what is happening to polio in that country. The data from that country, at
http://www.polioeradication.org/Dataandmonitoring/Poliothisweek.aspxtell a different story from the newspapers. As of today, 31 March, Pakistan and Afghanistan have registered 21 cases of WPV in the first quarter of 2015, compared to 40 cases in the first quarter of 2014. Either surveillance has declined in these endemic countries, or, as seems more likely, polio has declined.
Moreover, sub-Saharan Africa has been free of WPV since last August; the wartorn countries of the Mideast are all polio free.
Persistent polio transmission in Nigeria and Afghanistan is weakening, and WPV is down, though not yet out, in Pakistan.
