Dear All,
Every generation of public health professionals builds on the shoulders of those who preceded it. Dr. J. D. Millar, initially a leader in global smallpox eradication, went on, after smallpox eradication, to lead the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH.
His recent passing reminds us of his legacy, including his prolific writings on smallpox. He co-authored work on the role of funerals in spreading smallpox in Sierra Leone, a phenomenon recently relearned in the Ebola outbreaks in that country.
Good reading.
