Regional Service Provision Assessment (SPA) Data Analysis Workshop
June 14-23, 2016 Pretoria, South Africa

The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program is seeking applications from universities, research institutes, the Ministry of Health, and non-governmental organizations in Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Senegal, and Tanzania for a Service Provision Assessment (SPA)* Data Analysis Workshop, to be held in Pretoria, South Africa from June 14 - 23, 2016. The workshop will teach participants to analyze the SPA data in their respective countries to address research questions related to delivery and quality of health services. The language for the workshop is English. Participants will work in teams of three people throughout the workshop to answer pre-identified research question(s) through analysis of SPA data. At the end of the workshop, each team will give a PowerPoint presentation outlining their final research questions, preliminary literature review, conceptual framework, key variables, analytical methods, preliminary analysis results, and policy implications.

Interested applicants must meet the following criteria:

Must apply as a team of three individuals from the same institution and be familiar with issues in the healthcare system of the respective country
Must have at least a Master´s degree in public health, demography, statistics, or related subject. A Master´s degree is not necessary if the participant has equivalent experience as well as basic straining in data use and analysis
Must be able to understand and communicate in English
Must be able to attend every day of the workshop
Must have a laptop computer that can be used throughout the workshop
Must be committed to share the information with colleagues at home institution after the workshop is completed.

Applications should include the following:

A completed application form (one per team)
A one-page proposal (one per team) outlining research question(s) that could be answered with SPA data and describing its potential program or policy significance
A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume for each team member with a list of publications (if any) and complete contact information (Email, Telephone, and Mailing Address)

Workshop Costs
Lodging, meals, and local transportation in Pretoria for all participants will be covered by The DHS Program. The statistical software package Stata 14 will be provided for use during the workshop.

All applicants are expected to first seek their own funding sources to cover airfare and transportation to/from the airport in the home country. The DHS Program will provide a very limited number of travel fellowships. Please contact Arlene Iriho (Spaworkshop@dhsprogram.com) before April 19 for more information if you wish to be considered for a travel fellowship. If chosen for the workshop teams must secure funding for airfare and transportation to the airport in their home country by May 11.

Applicants who are accepted must submit a letter from their employer approving participation for the entirety of the workshop.
