Most viewed items on polio eradication, 2016
These two dozen items tell a mixed story, with steadily declining incidence levels in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where environmental sampling and traditional AFP surveillance are both in place.
The optimism of early 2016, based on Nigeria’s putative interruption of WPV transmission, is now subdued, as the world holds its breath to see whether Borno has stopped transmission, and whether the virus has spread elsewhere.
Amid these sombering considerations, it should not be forgotten that the use of the polio Emergency Operations Centre in Abuja successfully to stop Ebola transmission in Lagos and Port Harcourt is cause for celebration. If Ebola claimed 11,000 lives in three small countries of West Africa, how many lives would it have claimed, unchecked, in the continent’s most populous nation? Let us rejoice in the epidemics which did not happen.
