Unique among the vaccine preventable diseases, pertussis uses different antigens in developed and developing countries. In general, developing countries use the whole cell vaccine; developed countries use the acellular vaccine. It is in the industrialized countries that the debate continues on best strategies for cutting incidence, including “cocoon” vaccination of family members.

For those interested in the disease in developing countries, http://www.childsurvival.net/?content=com_articles&artid=6527 is a useful starting point.

Good reading.
