Update on vaccine-derived polioviruses – worldwide, January 2017-June 2018
http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/275564/WER9343.pdf
Since 2012, only type 1 WPV has been detected worldwide. This review of VDPV for the 18 months through end June 2018 shows all three types of VDPV, notably from DRC, the Horn of Africa, Nigeria, and Papua New Guinea.
From the discussion: “Gaps in immunity to poliovirus type 2 remain in high-risk areas and continue to increase with time after the switch from tOPV to bOPV in 2016. Continued detection of VDPV2s in 2017 and into 2018 demonstrates that there are substantial populations of children who did not received the second dose of polio vaccine before the switch.”
