Most Viewed Items on Child Survival, Jan-Dec 2018
For New Year’s Day, please see below, by number of hits, the 50 most viewed articles on www.childsurvival.net from 2018.
Among the 904 items to appear in 2018, polio, AFP surveillance and environmental sampling counted for 221 citations this year. Vaccine hesitancy and vaccine acceptance were mentioned in 34 titles. HIV came third, with 33 mentions. Routine vaccination was next, with 29 mentions. Malaria was fourth, at 25. Diarrheal diseases and rotavirus vaccines were in fifth and sixth places, with 18 and 16 mentions each.
Will polio and AFP surveillance be lower on the list in four or five years? Perhaps. W.H.O. has rescheduled to 2022 the deadline for certification of WPV eradication. The disease is now endemic in three countries, but GPEI continues to contend with vaccine derived poliovirus in places as far apart as DRC and Papua New Guinea. After circulating vaccine derived poliovirus is eradicated, VDPV will, absent effective antivirals, persist in long term excretors of the virus.
Individual mentions of eradication and elimination of diseases other than polio accounted, collectively, for 33 mentions. These included guinea worm disease, hepatitis B, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, measles/rubella, neonatal tetanus, and onchocerciasis.
Six items, summarized in item 49, are Cochrane and other systematic reviews.
This listing stops with the 50 most viewed items. For those hungry for more, go to www.childsurvival.net and type your key word into the search machine in the upper right hand corner.
